SUMMARY:Exploring the Knob and Kettle Landscape of Oliver Park with Peter Sussman
DESCRIPTION:The portion of Linden Hills west of Xerxes Avenue including Linden Hills Park was platted as the Oliver Park Addition in 1885. \nThe low-lying land south of Lake Calhoun/Bde Maka Ska was known as “Fern Valley” and homes were initially built on the hills west from Zenith Ave. Our walking tour will follow the progression of home dates and styles as the neighborhood filled in and recently has experienced significant upgrading and replacement. \nThe tour will depart from the LHHSG table at the Linden Hills Fall Festival.

SUMMARY:Southwest of Lake Harriet: From Mrs. Thornton's Resort to the Fulton Neighborhood
DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED from July 23 due to inclement weather. \nWe will explore the evolution of this corner of the Fulton neighborhood from its beginning as a rural lake resort through the rapid extension south of Linden Hills. From the opening of Robert Fulton School in 1911 and the Xerxes Avenue streetcar line extension that soon followed\, Fulton spread across both hills and former marshland. We will learn of early residents preceding 1911\, including Black families\, trace how public-school needs have been met in the Lake Harriet district\, pass by the original building of Lake Harriet Methodist Church\, moved in 1916 to 49th and York\, and view the ongoing change in character of Fulton due to recently built houses replacing earlier ones. \nThe tours will begin at 6:30 p.m. from the corner of Thomas Avenue S. and W. Lake Harriet Parkway. The tour will be held rain or shine\, except if an electrical storm is forecasted for the day of the event. Those wishing to attend should RSVP below.

SUMMARY:[VIRTUAL] Walking Tour: Third Wave of Linden Hills Development
DESCRIPTION:We are in a new era in which any property in the neighborhood is a potential site for new construction\, up to three units per lot. We will view recently-built examples alongside houses from the late 19th century through what was presumed to be the full “build-out” of Linden Hills in the 20th century. What has influenced development and how has the neighborhood’s character evolved? First Wave was initial land claims\, development schemes\, and early residents through self-identity as a community ca. 1902. Second Wave was the subsequently built community described in the 2001 book Down at the Lake. Third Wave precursors overlapped the late Second Wave: Infill of last open lots\, initial tear-downs introducing disparate styles\, and businesses less\nconnected to serving the immediate community. \nThis talk will be conducted via Google Meet.

SUMMARY:Fort Snelling at Bdote: 200 Years of History
DESCRIPTION:Fort Snelling at Bdote background reading list from Linden Hills Public Library \nFor millennia\, the place where the Minnesota River joins the Mississippi has been a crossroads\, a place of strategic power. But that symbolism is complicated. This tour is a powerful reminder that most Minnesotans today are descendants of immigrants\, living on conquered land. \nPeter DeCarlo\, author of Fort Snelling at Bdote\, shares the story of the power of place and its peoples. He introduces us to key people who lived in the area. Their lives demonstrate a complicated story laden with the brutal realities of how people were treated\, government and those chosen as leaders\, and the landscape. \nPeter DeCarlo is a historian whose research centers on the history of colonialism in Minnesota. He works at the Minnesota Historical Society.
