SUMMARY:The Grand Meadow Chert Quarry: A Significant New Indigenous Site
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker\, Tom Trow\, is the lead archaeologist for the effort to open to the public a long-\nhidden archaeological and cultural site in Mower County\, MN. For about 400 years\, ending in\naround 1400 CE\, the Grand Meadow Chert Quarry was the most important place in southeastern\nMN and possibly the whole state\, at the time. Families and entire villages came here for the\nstone called “chert” (flint is a type of chert)\, used for everyday tools including awls\, hide scrapers\,\nspear points\, and arrowheads. Tools made from this chert have been found at sites in 52 counties\nin the state\, including Hennepin.

SUMMARY:Anglo-Dakota Women Straddling Cultures in the Early 19th Century
DESCRIPTION:Program presenter Dr. Jane Lamm Carroll will examine the experiences of four granddaughters of Chief Cloudman\, bicultural women who grew up near Lake Harriet; and of another Anglo-Dakota\, Daybreak Woman\, who was born and raised in a Mdewakanton band at a trading post on the Minnesota River. Compared to their peers\, how did these women of mixed parentage identify\, socialize\, and navigate language\, culture\, marriage\, family life\, and aging? Were they comfortable or at ease in the Anglo-American or the Dakota communities? \nDr. Carroll is author of the award-winning book\, Daybreak Woman: An Anglo-Dakota Life\, and professor of history and women’s studies at St. Catherine University.

SUMMARY:The History of Two Historic Neighborhood Churches: Linden Hills Congregational United Church of Christ and Edina Morningside Community Church
DESCRIPTION:This program tells the story of two churches–their history\, their architecture\, and their\nneighborhoods. Linden Hills Congregational Church grew out of the Union Sunday School\, which began meeting in 1896. By 1903\, charter members had built a frame church building at 42nd and Upton designed by George H. Keith. The Linden Hills congregation later provided help to the founding members of the Morningside church as they sought meeting space. This began an enduring relationship between the two congregations each of which helped shape neighborhood life. The Edina Morningside Community Church building was designed by Harry Wild Jones. \nSuggested donation is $5 for non-members of LHHSG. An optional lunch at Hilltop Restaurant\, 5101 Arcadia Ave\, Edina\, MN 55436\, follows. RSVP on this page for lunch by Wednesday\, November 29\, or call (612) 799-5141. Everyone is welcome.

SUMMARY:ABCFM Dakota and Ojibwe Missions in the 1830s: How similar were they?
DESCRIPTION:In the 1830s Boston’s American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) made a major Protestant outreach to Native Americans. Ironically\, it approved Rev. Jedediah D. Stevens’ plan for a mission with Chief Maȟpíya Wičhášta (Cloudman) and his Ȟeyáta Othuŋwe village (at Bde Maka Ska) after laymen Samuel and Gideon Pond had already begun an independent Dakota mission. \nTo give us perspective on Stevens and the Pond brothers\, Linda Bryan will present a geographic timeline overview of the ABCFM’s various Dakota missions and will compare it to the ABCFM’s Ojibwe missions in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Linda is a former social studies teacher who volunteers at historic sites. \nSuggested donation is $5 for non-members of LHHSG. Everyone is welcome.

SUMMARY:When Minnehaha Flowed with Whiskey: A Spirited History of the Falls with Karen Cooper
DESCRIPTION:Linden Hills resident and historian Karen E. Cooper has spoken to LHHSG on several occasions sharing the history of Minnehaha Falls. These stories are told in Karen’s book\, When Minnehaha Flowed with Whiskey\, published in 2022 by the Minnesota Historical Society. Just for us\, Karen will tell stories from the book and some that didn’t make it into the book including drunken commotion on the river and Temperance Movement extremist Carrie Nation. \nSuggested donation of $5 for non-members. \nAn optional lunch follows the program. \nDue to space limitation (50)\, please make a reservation for attending the program and a separate reservation for attending the lunch.

DESCRIPTION:The history of Lake Street is being made as we speak. Join Lake Street historian Cara\nLetofsky for a combination history and current events of 27th and Lake\, otherwise known\nas Downtown Longfellow. SUMMARY:Places in the Park: St. Louis Park presented by Bill Beyer
DESCRIPTION:Named by real estate speculators\, shaped by railroads\, and the subject of a huge social experiment by one of the world’s richest men\, St. Louis Park has stories to tell. Industry rode the rails but fizzled in financial panic. Today\, “fossil streets” drop historical hints\, and a bankrupt bank sends us down a rabbit hole of surprising extent. \nBill Beyer\, retired architect\, Park resident for 36 years\, and trustee of the St. Louis Park Historical Society\, will present some stories about the city’s founding and early history.

SUMMARY:[VIRTUAL] Saving St. Anthony Falls
DESCRIPTION:In 1876\, the Corps of Engineers finished a massive concrete wall under the Mississippi River at St. Anthony Falls. It stands three stories tall and spans the river. It is an essential piece of Twin Cities infrastructure that no one can see and few know exists. It safeguards Minneapolis’ water supply and helps ensure the river doesn’t undermine bridges or other infrastructure. No one has inspected it for 145 years and no one accepts ownership. How much longer will it last? Retired Park Superintendent John Anfinson of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area will share his concerns for this critical piece of our local infrastructure. \nUpdate: Due to COVID-19 restrictions\, this talk will be held exclusively on Zoom. E-mail contact@lindenhillshistory.org for further information.
