SUMMARY:When Minnehaha Flowed with Whiskey: A Spirited History of the Falls with Karen Cooper
DESCRIPTION:Linden Hills resident and historian Karen E. Cooper has spoken to LHHSG on several occasions sharing the history of Minnehaha Falls. Now she will tell stories of the rowdy mayhem and boozy carryings on at the Falls in the years between 1850s and the 1900s. These stories are told in Karen’s book\, When Minnehaha Flowed with Whiskey\, published in 2022 by the Minnesota Historical Society. Just for us\, Karen will tell stories from the book and some that didn’t make it into the book including drunken commotion on the river and Temperance Movement extremist Carrie Nation. \nSuggested donation of $5 for non-members. \nAn optional lunch follows the program. \nDue to space limitation (50)\, please make a reservation for attending the program and a separate reservation for attending the lunch.

DESCRIPTION:According to the U.S. census\, in 1940 there were only 51 people of Japanese ancestry living in the entire state of Minnesota.  Today\, that number is in the thousands.  Sally Sudo\, retired Minneapolis public school teacher and survivor of an American concentration camp\, will share her story of why her family and hundreds of other Japanese American families like hers decided to resettle in Minnesota after WWII\, and the hardships and discrimination they faced trying to make a life here.

SUMMARY:[VIRTUAL] Saving St. Anthony Falls
DESCRIPTION:In 1876\, the Corps of Engineers finished a massive concrete wall under the Mississippi River at St. Anthony Falls. It stands three stories tall and spans the river. It is an essential piece of Twin Cities infrastructure that no one can see and few know exists. It safeguards Minneapolis’ water supply and helps ensure the river doesn’t undermine bridges or other infrastructure. No one has inspected it for 145 years and no one accepts ownership.  How much longer will it last? Retired Park Superintendent John Anfinson of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area will share his concerns for this critical piece of our local infrastructure. \nUpdate: Due to COVID-19 restrictions\, this talk will be held exclusively on Zoom. SUMMARY:The Lost Japanese Gardens of John Scott Bradstreet\, with Kathy Kullberg
DESCRIPTION:John Scott Bradstreet\, leading interior designer of the early 20 th century in the Twin Cities\, traveled extensively to Europe and Asia on buying trips to furnish his retail shops and clients homes. Early on\, he became enamored with the simple but elegant gardens of the Japanese artisans. Over the course of three decades\, he either built or influenced over nine known gardens. One of the most well-known was that of Linden Hills resident\, Frank F. Fletcher\, on West 44th Street. Historian Kathy Kullberg will present her research into the discovery of these lost gardens.

SUMMARY:[VIRTUAL] I-35W and Minneapolis: Community Impact
DESCRIPTION:Approximately 25\,000 residents were displaced by the construction of I-35W that went between Crosstown\, 2nd Ave and Stevens Ave in South Minneapolis. The public works construction project began in 1956 and was completed in 1967. Greg Donofrio\, director of the U of MN Heritage Studies and Public History Program\, and U of MN public historian Denise Pike have done extensive research on the building of 35W and are gathering stories from displaced residents. DESCRIPTION:Join the Linden Hills History Study Group to hear Richard Kronick tell the story of George Elmslie\, chief draftsman from 1895 to 1909 for Louis Sullivan\, Chicago’s leading architect. Sullivan was dubbed “Prophet of Modernism\,” but Richard will show that\, for eight well-known buildings that came out of Sullivan’s office\, most of the credit belongs to George Elmslie. After leaving Sullivan in 1910\, Elmslie moved to Minnesota and joined the practice of William Purcell and George Feick\, Jr. Meanwhile\, as Sullivan’s fame grew\, Elmslie’s contribution became an inconvenient truth and was nearly erased from history.  \nWe will host Richard’s talk virtually through Zoom. SUMMARY:[VIRTUAL] Antisemitism in Minneapolis
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis Jews\, like their African-American and Japanese-American fellow residents\, faced serious discrimination and social exclusion in employment\, housing\, and some public accommodations. Indeed\, one of the leading investigative journalists and essayists of the era\, Carey McWilliams\, noted in his Common Ground article “Minneapolis: The Curious Twin” (Autumn 1946)\, “One might even say\, with a measure of justification\, that Minneapolis is the capitol [sic] of anti-Semitism in the United States.” In the next year\, led by Mayor Hubert Humphrey and a wide coalition of groups\, the City Council passed among the first open housing and fair employment ordinances in the country. Steve Hunegs\, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas\, will help us understand the history of antisemitism in Minneapolis. \nWe will host Steve’s talk virtually through Google Meet. SUMMARY:Women's Right to Vote with a Minneapolis Perspective
DESCRIPTION:In 1919\, the Minnesota Legislature recognized women’s right to vote in presidential elections. And in 1920\, after the U.S. Legislature passed the 19th Amendment and two-thirds of the states ratified the amendment\, women gained the right to vote. This right to vote took decades of discussion\, protest\, and persuasion. Historian Linda Lounsbury will examine the Women’s Suffrage Movement\, the Women’s Right to Vote focusing on the local scene\, and leaders including Linden Hills’ Clara Ueland.

SUMMARY:[VIRTUAL] Walking Tour: Third Wave of Linden Hills Development
DESCRIPTION:We are in a new era in which any property in the neighborhood is a potential site for new construction\, up to three units per lot. We will view recently-built examples alongside houses from the late 19th century through what was presumed to be the full “build-out” of Linden Hills in the 20th century. What has influenced development and how has the neighborhood’s character evolved? First Wave was initial land claims\, development schemes\, and early residents through self-identity as a community ca. 1902. Second Wave was the subsequently built community described in the 2001 book Down at the Lake. Third Wave precursors overlapped the late Second Wave: Infill of last open lots\, initial tear-downs introducing disparate styles\, and businesses less\nconnected to serving the immediate community. \nThis talk will be conducted via Google Meet.

Thus\, this program has been postponed. \nWe will look at rescheduling when things have settled down. \nIn 1905\, Wonderland Park on East Lake Street was a popular amusement park where the\npeople of Minneapolis could ride one of the world’s finest carousels\, witness amazing\, death-defying acts\, and even tour a display of local premature infants being treated in the new scientific marvel\, an electric incubator. Susan Hunter Weir\, Director of the Friends of the Cemetery\, Pioneers & Soldiers Memorial Cemetery\, will share stories and images about this time in Minneapolis history.

SUMMARY:Trench Warfare in Midtown Minneapolis: From Railroad to Greenway
DESCRIPTION:Just over a century ago the Minneapolis City Council directed the Milwaukee Railroad Company to construct a trench located just north of Lake Street\, between Hennepin and Cedar Avenues\, and 37 bridges for roads spanning the trench. This provided a grade separation between the railroad and the city’s automobile and streetcar traffic for three miles\, from Hennepin to Cedar Avenues. Learn about the controversies surrounding this major civil works project in the early 1900s\, the trench and corridor transitions from industry to residential use and from rail to bicycle traffic over the last 100 years\, as well as what the future might hold for the Midtown Greenway. The program will be presented by local historians Tom Balcom and Aaron Isaacs.

Their lives demonstrate a complicated story laden with the brutal realities of how people were treated\, government and those chosen as leaders\, and the landscape. \nPeter DeCarlo is a historian whose research centers on the history of colonialism in Minnesota. He works at the Minnesota Historical Society.
