SUMMARY:[VIRTUAL] I-35W and Minneapolis: Community Impact
DESCRIPTION:Approximately 25\,000 residents were displaced by the construction of I-35W that went between Crosstown\, 2nd Ave and Stevens Ave in South Minneapolis. The public works construction project began in 1956 and was completed in 1967. Greg Donofrio\, director of the U of MN Heritage Studies and Public History Program\, and U of MN public historian Denise Pike have done extensive research on the building of 35W and are gathering stories from displaced residents. They will share their findings. \nThis program will be held on Zoom. We will send all who are on the LHHSG email list a link to join the Zoom session. If we do not have your email address\, please call 612-926-0646 or email contact@lindenhillshistory.org and give us the email address where you’d like the link to be sent\, so that you can participate. SUMMARY:[VIRTUAL] George Elmslie: In the Shadow of Louis Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:Join the Linden Hills History Study Group to hear Richard Kronick tell the story of George Elmslie\, chief draftsman from 1895 to 1909 for Louis Sullivan\, Chicago’s leading architect. Sullivan was dubbed “Prophet of Modernism\,” but Richard will show that\, for eight well-known buildings that came out of Sullivan’s office\, most of the credit belongs to George Elmslie. After leaving Sullivan in 1910\, Elmslie moved to Minnesota and joined the practice of William Purcell and George Feick\, Jr. Meanwhile\, as Sullivan’s fame grew\, Elmslie’s contribution became an inconvenient truth and was nearly erased from history. \nWe will host Richard’s talk virtually through Zoom. We will send all who are on the LHHSG email list a link to join the Zoom session for December 7 at 7:00 p.m. If we do not have your email address\, please call 612-926-0646 or email contact@lindenhillshistory.org so that you can participate. \nRichard will present this talk in the 1911 Oscar and Katherine Owre house in Minneapolis\, designed by Purcell\, Feick & Elmslie\, and the presentation will include a brief tour of the house. \nAll are welcome.

SUMMARY:[VIRTUAL] Antisemitism in Minneapolis
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis Jews\, like their African-American and Japanese-American fellow residents\, faced serious discrimination and social exclusion in employment\, housing\, and some public accommodations. Indeed\, one of the leading investigative journalists and essayists of the era\, Carey McWilliams\, noted in his Common Ground article “Minneapolis: The Curious Twin” (Autumn 1946)\, “One might even say\, with a measure of justification\, that Minneapolis is the capitol [sic] of anti-Semitism in the United States.” In the next year\, led by Mayor Hubert Humphrey and a wide coalition of groups\, the City Council passed among the first open housing and fair employment ordinances in the country. Steve Hunegs\, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas\, will help us understand the history of antisemitism in Minneapolis. \nWe will host Steve’s talk virtually through Google Meet. We will send all who are on the LHHSG email list a link to join the Google Meet session for November 5 at 7:00 p.m. If we do not have your email address\, please call 612-926-0646 or email contact@lindenhillshistory.org and give us the email address where you’d like the Google Meet link to be sent\, so that you can participate.\nEveryone is welcome.

SUMMARY:Women's Right to Vote with a Minneapolis Perspective
DESCRIPTION:In 1919\, the Minnesota Legislature recognized women’s right to vote in presidential elections. And in 1920\, after the U.S. Legislature passed the 19th Amendment and two-thirds of the states ratified the amendment\, women gained the right to vote. This right to vote took decades of discussion\, protest\, and persuasion. Historian Linda Lounsbury will examine the Women’s Suffrage Movement\, the Women’s Right to Vote focusing on the local scene\, and leaders including Linden Hills’ Clara Ueland.

SUMMARY:[VIRTUAL] Walking Tour: Third Wave of Linden Hills Development
DESCRIPTION:We are in a new era in which any property in the neighborhood is a potential site for new construction\, up to three units per lot. We will view recently-built examples alongside houses from the late 19th century through what was presumed to be the full “build-out” of Linden Hills in the 20th century. What has influenced development and how has the neighborhood’s character evolved? First Wave was initial land claims\, development schemes\, and early residents through self-identity as a community ca. 1902. Second Wave was the subsequently built community described in the 2001 book Down at the Lake. Third Wave precursors overlapped the late Second Wave: Infill of last open lots\, initial tear-downs introducing disparate styles\, and businesses less\nconnected to serving the immediate community. \nThis talk will be conducted via Google Meet.

SUMMARY:Minneapolis Reuses the Railroad
DESCRIPTION:Until the 1970s\, large swaths of Minneapolis were devoted to railroad use — depots\, switching yards\, freight houses\, and shop facilities. Much of that has disappeared\, along with the industry that depended on the railroads. Historian Aaron Isaacs takes us on a tour of the city showing what was here before and what has replaced it.

SUMMARY:Twin Cities Hard Boiled
DESCRIPTION:James Eli Shiffer\, author of The King of Skid Row: John Bacich and the Twilight Years of Old Minneapolis\, will visually take us to visit the nucleus of the old Gateway at Hennepin\, Nicollet\, and Washington Avenues. Though office towers\, upscale hotels\, and condos abound here\, imagine this intersection 60 years earlier where you are surrounded by seedy nightclubs\, bars\, and flophouses in such filthy\, decaying structures that the resident vermin left scathing reviews on Yelp; by individuals sprawled on the grass at Gateway Park; or on corners gossiping\, fighting\, and passing around a communal bottle of booze. Now imagine yourself at the Sourdough Bar\, ordering around for your buddies while chatting with barkeep John “Johnny Rex” Bacich\, the subject of our October program and of James Eli Shiffer’s book The King of Skid Row. Join us for a look back at the seamy side of the city!

SUMMARY:Trench Warfare in Midtown Minneapolis: From Railroad to Greenway
DESCRIPTION:Just over a century ago the Minneapolis City Council directed the Milwaukee Railroad Company to construct a trench located just north of Lake Street\, between Hennepin and Cedar Avenues\, and 37 bridges for roads spanning the trench. This provided a grade separation between the railroad and the city’s automobile and streetcar traffic for three miles\, from Hennepin to Cedar Avenues. Learn about the controversies surrounding this major civil works project in the early 1900s\, the trench and corridor transitions from industry to residential use and from rail to bicycle traffic over the last 100 years\, as well as what the future might hold for the Midtown Greenway. The program will be presented by local historians Tom Balcom and Aaron Isaacs.

SUMMARY:Fort Snelling at Bdote: 200 Years of History
DESCRIPTION:Fort Snelling at Bdote background reading list from Linden Hills Public Library \nFor millennia\, the place where the Minnesota River joins the Mississippi has been a crossroads\, a place of strategic power. But that symbolism is complicated. This tour is a powerful reminder that most Minnesotans today are descendants of immigrants\, living on conquered land. \nPeter DeCarlo\, author of Fort Snelling at Bdote\, shares the story of the power of place and its peoples. He introduces us to key people who lived in the area. Their lives demonstrate a complicated story laden with the brutal realities of how people were treated\, government and those chosen as leaders\, and the landscape. \nPeter DeCarlo is a historian whose research centers on the history of colonialism in Minnesota. He works at the Minnesota Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Robert E. Fischer and Sand Souvenirs at Minnehaha Creek
DESCRIPTION:Robert Fischer was the most unusual artist ever inspired by Minnehaha Falls. From about 1900 until 1940\, he created tens of thousands of delicate sand designs in clear glass containers\, using nothing but the natural colored sands found in Minnehaha Park. Only a few of these still exist. Fischer lived in the Falls neighborhood for decades\, and also worked as Park Board commissioner\, poet\, patent medicine manufacturer\, and as policeman. Historian Karen Cooper will tell the story of Robert Fischer\, his sand art\, and his varied careers. Karen has spent many years revealing Minnehaha Park history and uncovering the stories of the characters who inhabited the area.

SUMMARY:Power to the People: Activism in the 1970s
DESCRIPTION:The Civil Rights marches of the 1950s and early 1960s and the anti-war protests of the late 1960s and early 1970s may have been more dramatic\, but a quieter kind of citizen activism in the Linden Hills neighborhood during the 1970s caused residents to band together to make their voices heard by city and county governments.   \nA panel of local residents\, led by Linda Lounsbury\, will talk about how they “fought City Hall” and how they won or lost their causes.  \n\nCarol Vaubel\, one of the founders of the Linden Hills Neighborhood Council\, organized meetings to get residents involved in changes to parks and streets.\nMike Miller\, a past PTA president\, advocated saving the Lake Harriet School.\nDon Hawkinson\, a local business owner\, was president of the Linden Hills Business Association and active in other causes.\nTom Neiman\, founder of the Southwest Community Education Program\, grew up in a family that initiated numerous activities and organizations to improve their community.\n\nTheir commitment to community participation and causes helped make Linden Hills what it is today.
