SUMMARY:Trench Warfare in Midtown Minneapolis: From Railroad to Greenway
DESCRIPTION:Just over a century ago the Minneapolis City Council directed the Milwaukee Railroad Company to construct a trench located just north of Lake Street\, between Hennepin and Cedar Avenues\, and 37 bridges for roads spanning the trench. This provided a grade separation between the railroad and the city’s automobile and streetcar traffic for three miles\, from Hennepin to Cedar Avenues. Learn about the controversies surrounding this major civil works project in the early 1900s\, the trench and corridor transitions from industry to residential use and from rail to bicycle traffic over the last 100 years\, as well as what the future might hold for the Midtown Greenway. The program will be presented by local historians Tom Balcom and Aaron Isaacs.

Their lives demonstrate a complicated story laden with the brutal realities of how people were treated\, government and those chosen as leaders\, and the landscape. \nPeter DeCarlo is a historian whose research centers on the history of colonialism in Minnesota. He works at the Minnesota Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Robert E. Fischer and Sand Souvenirs at Minnehaha Creek
DESCRIPTION:Robert Fischer was the most unusual artist ever inspired by Minnehaha Falls.  From about 1900 until 1940\, he created tens of thousands of delicate sand designs in clear glass containers\, using nothing but the natural colored sands found in Minnehaha Park.  Only a few of these still exist. Fischer lived in the Falls neighborhood for decades\, and also worked as Park Board commissioner\, poet\, patent medicine manufacturer\, and as policeman.  Historian Karen Cooper will tell the story of Robert Fischer\, his sand art\, and his varied careers.  Karen has spent many years revealing Minnehaha Park history and uncovering the stories of the characters who inhabited the area.

DESCRIPTION:Racial covenants were used to bar people of a given race\, ethnic origin\, or religion\, from buying or occupying property in Minneapolis. These discriminatory deeds underpinned an invisible system of American apartheid. This project\, Mapping Prejudice\, is headed up by a team of activists and scholars who are researching the city covenants with the help of volunteers. Using digital technology\, they are assembling the first-ever map of racial covenants for an American city. He will also provide a profile of Ruskin – undoubtedly the single most influential voice in 19th century European architecture.

DESCRIPTION:The Civil Rights marches of the 1950s and early 1960s and the anti-war protests of the late 1960s and early 1970s may have been more dramatic\, but a quieter kind of citizen activism in the Linden Hills neighborhood during the 1970s caused residents to band together to make their voices heard by city and county governments.   \nA panel of local residents\, led by Linda Lounsbury\, will talk about how they “fought City Hall” and how they won or lost their causes.  \n\nCarol Vaubel\, one of the founders of the Linden Hills Neighborhood Council\, organized meetings to get residents involved in changes to parks and streets.\nMike Miller\, a past PTA president\, advocated saving the Lake Harriet School.\nDon Hawkinson\, a local business owner\, was president of the Linden Hills Business Association and active in other causes.\nTom Neiman\, founder of the Southwest Community Education Program\, grew up in a family that initiated numerous activities and organizations to improve their community.\n\nTheir commitment to community participation and causes helped make Linden Hills what it is today.

DESCRIPTION:This event was originally scheduled for August 9\, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather. \nFollowing the 1981 tornado through southwest Minneapolis\, the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board refurbished the 1929 rock garden which is now the Peace Garden. The Men’s and Women’s Garden Club of Minneapolis (MWGCM) donated and planted trees and helped re-design the park’s arboretum. They continue to work with its native and mixed border gardens. Join us for a walking tour of these Lyndale Park gardens and features\, with an emphasis on their histories. \nSpeakers include Kay Wolfe\, with the MWGCM\, JoAnn Blatchley\, with the Friends of the Peace Garden\, and Teresa Grant\, Peace Garden Gardener. \nMeet in the Lyndale Park Bird Sanctuary shelter\, behind the Peace Garden/Bird Sanctuary parking lot. Bring a portable chair or stool if you would like to sit during parts of the tour.

DESCRIPTION:Highway 100 originated as a New Deal project in the 1930s. The idea to have small parks along the route became popular\, and citizens contributed funds for lilac plants. Seven parks along “Lilac Way” featured picnic tables and distinctive fireplaces called beehives. Kathy Johnson of the St. Louis Park Historical Society will tell the story of the road’s rich history. We’ll enjoy one of the remaining beehive parks\, Lilac Park\, with a boxed lunch option. Carpooling will be available.
